iPhone 4 vs. Motorola Droid X vs. HTC EVO 4G

Its a 3-way battle now between the latest smartphone releases, the HTC EVO 4G, the Apple iPhone 4 and the HTC Droid X. Here is a feature by feature comparison between the three.

Design and Display

At first glance the most obvious difference is the size.  Both HTC EVO 4G and Droid X feature a huge 4.3-inch touch screen while the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 inch screen. But iPhone 4 with 960 x 640 pixels has more pixel density for a clearer, sharper and crisper rendering of graphics and web pages. In comparison, Droid X has 854 x 480 and HTC EVO 4G has 800 x 480 pixel resolution. The iPhone 4 is the slimmest of the 3 at just 9.3mm; Droid X has a thickness of 9.7mm and the HTC EVO 4G is very thick at 12.7mm.

Processor

When it comes to processing speed it is difficult to pick a winner. All 3 phones use a different processor and all of them are really fast when compared to some of the earlier phones. The iPhone 4 has Apple’s own A4 processor, the EVO 4G has a 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon and the Droid X has the Texas Instruments OMAP chip clocked at 1GHz.

Camera

Both Droid X and EVO feature a 8 Megapixel camera on the back side with dual-LED flash while the iPhone 4 has a 5 Megapixel camera with single LED flash. Unlike Droid X, both iPhone 4 and EVO 4G have a front facing camera. iPhone 4 has just a VGA camera whereas the EVO 4G has a 1.3 megapixel camera. As for the Video, all 3 phones can shoot at 720p HD recording. iPhone 4 records at 30 fps as compared to 24 fps by HTC EVO 4G. The HTC EVO 4G is a winner in this category.

Storage

The lack of a microSD on the iPhone 4 may seem bad but if you consider what storage you get from a price perspective, the iPhone 4 emerges as the winner. The EVO 4G comes with an 8GB microSD card preinstalled, which can be expanded to 32GB. The iPhone 4 has no microSD option but the $200 iPhone 4 comes with a 16GB of memory and the $300 iPhone 4 comes with 32GB of memory. Now for the winner! The Droid X comes with 8GB of onboard memory plus 16GB of preinstalled memory with the support for up to 32 GB micro SD giving a grand total of 40GB.

Battery

iPhone battery life is spec’ed to be with 420 minutes talk time and 300 hours standby. HTC has spec’ed the HTC EVO 4G to have only 360 minutes of talk time. Droid X has a Talk time of up to 480 minutes and a standby time is up to 220 hours. HTC EVO 4G has been reported to drain the battery faster in most of its reviews.

Pricing & Plans

You can buy an iPhone 4 16GB for $199 for AT&T and Apple stores. HTC EVO 4G is also available for $199 at the Sprint Stores with a $100 mail-in rebate. You can avoid the hassle of mail-in rebate if you buy it form Radio Shack and Best Buy for the same price of $199. Droid X is also available at $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new 2-year contract.

As for plans, AT&T can get as low as $55 for a 200MB Data plan with 450 minutes of talk time (no messaging). AT&T also offers unlimited voice and messaging with 2GB data for $115. For the EVO Sprint has a minimum price point of $80 that gives you unlimited data, unlimited messaging, and 450 minutes of talk that includes the required premium data plan add-on. Droid X plans start at $70 that includes either a Nationwide Talk plan or a Nationwide Talk & Text plan (begin at a monthly rate of $39.99) plus an Email and Web for Smartphone plan starting at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.

It’s amazing how badly iPhone 4 sucks. It’s also amazing how Apple Fanboys will defend it until the end of time. I will freely note first off that I am not a fanboy by any stretch, however I do have the 3GS, which I love. I did buy the iPhone 4, and it was so terrible that I returned it and went back to my current 3GS. It was just that bad. It’s hilarious to me what Apple fanboys are saying in forums and blogs all across the web, defending this thing like it’s some sacred gem, pretending all its issues don’t even exist. Ridiculous. Check out the video I made on YouTube about “An Apple Fanboy’s take on Life…”. It’s at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPcQ-cYg8iA
