Android v1.5 ‘Cupcake’ Release delayed yet again

The much anticipated cupcake release (which was to happen last week) of Android 1.5 with a big list of of new features, has been delayed yet again. Sprint on its forums site has announced that the release will now be delayed by a week. Oddly though the forum message is no longer accessible.

What’s new in Android 1.5 (Cupcake)? Full Feature List

T-Mobile today announced that it plans to begin sending out the Android 1.5 “Cupcake” update starting the end of next week. As with previous software maintenance releases, the update will be randomly sent “over the air” to T-Mobile G1 customers. T-Mobile expects everyone to have their update by the end of May.

For a few days now Google has been blocking users of unlocked G1 from downloading for-pay applications from the Android market. Google says this is to prevent piracy but it has enraged some developers.
Apparently it was done to prevent anybody from using an unlocked phone from buying a for-pay application and then returning it within 24 hours to get a full refund from Google.  After the refund the user can then re-downloaded the application for free. It is being reported by some users on the T-Mobile official forums that they have received OTA update to their G1 phones, bringing the software version to RC-33. The most notable addition is the Google Latitude application With Google Latitude, you can see where your friends are and what they are up to, Quickly contact them with SMS, IM, or a phone call. All this while maintaining complete control over your privacy.

The Android G1 phone which is available in US and the UK since October 2008 will now be sold across Europe in the coming weeks. “We will introduce the G1 by Jan. 30 in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Austria,” T-Mobile Chief Executive Hamid Akhavan said on Monday. The Android-based phone will be available in Germany on Feb. 2 and in Poland later that month, Akhavan said.

The Android Guys have a story from a T-Mobile G1 owner who got charged for $102.85 (£70) in roaming charges — even after he turned off data roaming on his phone. The story goes that he was visiting the UK, and knowing that he would rack up high roaming charges while abroad, he turned off data roaming, data sync and 3G on the phone (although he did still use it for calls and texts under an international calling plan).

The T-Mobile G1 smart phone, the first wireless handset to be based on Google Inc.’s Android mobile operating system, carries a Bill-of-Materials (BOM) cost of $143.89, according to a virtual teardown conducted by iSuppli Corp.

Wal-Mart Inc. will start selling the G1 phone at a discounted price starting Wednesday, a Wal-Mart spokesman confirmed Monday night.
Wal-Mart will carry the Google Inc. (GOOG) G1 phone, sold through Deutsche Telekom AG’s (DT) T-Mobile USA, in 550 Wal-Mart stores at the reduced price of $ 148.88 for new customers, or existing customers eligible for an upgrade, who sign up for a two-year agreement, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien said.
