RIM to roll out BIS 3.0 on March 28th

RIM has announced that it will be updating its servers to BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.0 on between 2AM and 6AM EDT on Sunday, March 28th. So BlackBerry users will be out of service during this time. BIS 3.0 has good enhancements like 2-way Gmail sync, the ability to add/delete Gmail labels, support for .wma and OpenOffice files and more.

Verizon confirms BlackBerry Storm OS upgrade on May 31st

BoyGeniusReport has revealed that their sources at VZW confirm a new OS, 4.7.0.148 for the BlackBerry storm 9530, will be released on Sunday, May 31st at 3pm. According to Verizon, this is a “general maintenance release that improves the overall user experience.”
People who are very frustrated with the current buggy version of the OS can directly go to blackberry.com/update after that time to get the software update. Smartphones sales grew 12.7 precent in First Quarter of 2009

According to a new report from the market research firm Gartner, Smartphone sales surpassed 36.4 million units in the first quarter of 2009, a 12.7 per cent increase from the same period last year. This in spite of worldwide mobile phone sales decreased by 8.6 per cent as compared to the first quarter of 2008.

Jim Balsillie co-CEO said during a presentation to analysts and investors that Research In Motion is planning a next-generation version of its touchscreen BlackBerry Storm smartphone as part of a continuing push into the retail market.
Jim Balsillie said, “We see this very large and untapped consumer market”. He added that more than half of RIM’s 25 million subscribers now fall into the non-corporate category.

According to a survey report published by The NPD Group which is a leader in wireless industry market research, RIM’s BlackBerry Curve has moved past Apple’s iPhone to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. in the first quarter (Q1) of 2009. This achievement was immensely helped by an aggressive “buy-one-get-one” promotion by Verizon Wireless. The iPhone 3G came in second, followed by the BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Pearl, and the T-Mobile G1.
